NASCAR Announces New Logo And Premier Series Name Ahead Of The 2017 Season

NASCAR announced on Monday that it will have a new logo in 2017, and its premier series will be rebranded to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

Beginning in 2017, NASCAR’s logo will have a makeover for the first time since 1976. The font has been tweaked, and the colored background has been removed. The logo has been modernized. NASCAR believes that Monster Energy’s marketing initiatives will help bring more millennials to the racetrack, and the new logo is all about evolving with the times, while still keeping aspects of tradition. NASCAR says that it has been developing its new brand since early 2016.




“Our new NASCAR mark is modern, timeless, and embraces the heritage of our sport,” said Jill Gregory, NASCAR senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “It was important for us to recognize our history and implement a piece of each previous mark in the new design. Our goal was to evolve the sport’s visual identity to make it concise, relevant and functional, while respecting and maintaining the unique qualities of the original mark.”

From 1948 to 1955, NASCAR’s inaugural logo featured two red checkered flags and two cars. In 1956, NASCAR’s second logo was unveiled, and it kept the two cars, changing them to red, but it also featured a gold oval and two black and white checkered flags. The second edition of NASCAR’s logo was used through the 1963 season. The third logo was used from 1964 to 1975, and it has recently been featured during the throwback Bojangles’ Southern 500 weekend at Darlington Raceway. The logo has two silver cars, two black and white checkered flags and the words “NASCAR” and “INTERNATIONAL” in white with a blue background. The most recognizable NASCAR logo is of course the most recent one that has been in use for the last 40 years.

On December 1, NASCAR named Monster Energy as the premier series entitlement partner at a press conference in Las Vegas, Nevada; however, few details of the rebranding of the series weren’t announced at the time. NASCAR Chairman and CEO, Brian France said that details of the new partnership would be announced in the near future, and well, that time is now, and the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series logo is the first announcement beyond the initial press conference. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series logo, has a black background, with the entitlement partner’s brand filling the majority of the space. Underneath Monster Energy, is the new NASCAR logo, accompanied by the words CUP SERIES in the same modern font. A Monster Energy green line is placed above and below NASCAR CUP SERIES, separating it from the entitlement partner’s branding.




The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season will kick-off on Saturday, February 18, 2017, with The Clash at Daytona. Live coverage will be found on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) at 8 p.m. ET. The points season will begin at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, February 26, 2017, with the 59th running of the Daytona 500. The prestigious race will be broadcast live on FOX at 2 p.m. ET.
