Raphael Lessard Capitalizes On Late-Race Restart At Myrtle Beach For Third Win Of 2016

by September 18, 2016

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – On a late-race restart in Saturday night’s Bakerdist.com Honeywell 200 presented by 100.3 The Team at Myrtle Beach Speedway, Raphael Lessard held off the field to win his third CARS Super Late Model Tour event of the season.

Fifteen-year old Lessard entered Myrtle Beach coming off a win at Concord Speedway. The driver of the No. 99 FRL Express/Team Coach Imaging/Toyota/JBLAudio Toyota started on the pole on Saturday; however, the teenager fell back through the field early on to save his tires for the end. With just nine laps to go in the 100-lap race, Lessard passed Matt Craig for the race lead. Craig had been dominate all night long.

“At the end there, we kind of used our stuff up more than most,” Craig said. “The 99 and Raphael, he had a great car. He had the best car here, he passed us clean.”

The final caution of the night came out with just three laps to go. On the restart, Lessard was able to hold onto the win, as well as his lead in the championship point standings. The David Gilliland Racing driver now has three wins, six top-five and seven top-10 finishes in eight starts in 2016.

“My car was very, very good,” Lessard said. “I had to save my tires, and my crew chief said to me – told me what to do. I did it right, and we ended up in Victory Lane. I can’t thank him enough. He did an awesome job all year. We’re going to try and do the same for the next CARS Tour race, and it’s going to be very good.”

Following the tense restart on lap 97, former Allison Legacy Series driver, Gus Dean was able to catapult his self to a second place finish. Dalton Sargeant, who finished fifth in the ARCA Racing Series race at Chicagoland on Friday, was able to capture a third place finish at Myrtle Beach Speedway on Saturday. Matt Craig lost a few positions in the closing laps and had to settle for a fourth place finish. Tyler Ankrum rounded out the top-five.

Up next on the schedule for the CARS Super Late Model Tour is the Cloer Construction 300 at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday, October 29.
