Dalton Sargeant Takes Control of General Tire Superspeedway Challengeby Kyle Pokrefky September 24, 2016
SPARTA, Ky. — Dalton Sargeant and Venturini Motorsports’s No. 55 team made a statement in the Crosley 150 at Kentucky Speedway on Friday night, seizing control of the General Tire Superspeedway Challenge.
Turning in a solid runner-up finish, Sargeant and Co. took advantage of late-race troubles with Superspeedway Challenge leader Chase Briscoe to come out of Kentucky with a healthy cushion over Briscoe’s No. 77 Cunningham Motorsports team.
Entering the season finale at Kansas Speedway in three weeks, the No. 55 team unofficially leads the Superspeedway Challenge standings by 60 points over the No. 77.
Speaking to The Fourth Turn after climbing out of his car on pit road, Sargeant said that the accomplishment of taking over the Superspeedway title standings is big for his team.
“That’s really cool,” Sargeant said. “I think it’s great for everybody at Venturini Motorsports. It’s pretty big for Billy Venturini and I’m definitely going to try to out-run that No. 77 car and see if we can at least win the Superspeedway Challenge.”
Sargeant unloaded with what he described as ‘the best car he’s unloaded all season long’ and was able to showcase strong pace throughout the 102-lap race.
Starting on the outside of the front row on a green-white-checkered restart, Sargeant gave eventual winner and inside lane starter Austin Cindric all he had; yet came up short by just over half a second.
“We had a really good day overall,” Sargeant said. “We struggled some at the beginning – I don’t think any of it was really our fault, we just got caught up with some wrong lanes and stuff.
“Overall, as always, Venturini Motorsports did a great job bringing a great No. 55 Windows 10 Toyota Camry to the track. [I had a] blast the first time here at Kentucky Speedway. The track with the repave was really fast and super fun. Made it difficult to pass and race, obviously, I think that’s just the characteristic of a repave.
“Overall, we had a really good car and you can’t be disappointed with coming home second. We just gave it all we had.”
