Timmy Solomito Wins Icebreaker 150, Earns First Career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Victory

by April 12, 2016

THOMPSON, Conn. – Timmy Solomito won his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in the Icebreaker 150 on Sunday.

Solomito was able to get around series veteran and NASCAR XFINITY Series driver, Ryan Preece on lap 117 to win the prestigious event. He led 50 laps throughout the day. The 24-year old from New York started deep in the pack in 13th, but he was able to charge his way to the front of the pack by the time the race had reached lap 94.

“If you want to earn one, that’s the way to do it right there,” Solomito said. “I’ve been coming to Thompson for many years, and I’ve always wanted to win here, and I’m happy that I finally got to make that right turn over here to Victory Lane. I can’t thank my guys enough. They did an incredible job on the stop.”

Doug Coby started on the pole, but it was Preece, who led the first 85 laps. Jason Bonsignore took over the lead and set the pace until he was passed by Solomito. However, not long after, Bonsignore made his way back to the top spot on lap 103. A lap later, it was once again, Solomito out front. On lap 111, Preece took over the leader, but he would have to settle for a second place finish after the lead was exchanged for the final time on lap 117 when Solomito sailed by.

“Obviously the 16 (Tommy Solomito) hit it pretty good there, and they got it pretty good for that last stop, and the stagger blew up on us a little bit, but they had a really good car there, and we just missed it there in the last stop,” Preece said. “I thought we were going to have something for him, and we got to the lead and all of the sudden it started over rotating a tick and then I tried compensating by going to the bottom, and it looked like we were starting to reel him in a little, and then I wore it out down there.”

Justin Bonsignore, Doug Coby and Ron Silk finished out the top-five. Rounding out the top-10 were Donny Lia, Eric Goodale, Jimmy Blewett, Rowan Pennink and Woody Ptikat.

Although the race had a stout 27-car field, there were only two cautions throughout the 150-lap race. There were also six lead changes among three drivers. Ryan Preece led 91 laps, more than any other driver on Sunday.

The second race on the season schedule for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is the NAPA Spring Sizzler 200 at Stafford Motor Speedway on Sunday, April 24.
