George Brunnhoelzl III Makes Late Race Charge To Win At Concord Speedwayby Hunter Thomas April 6, 2016
CONCORD, N.C. – George Brunnhoelzl III took the lead away from Ted Christopher with three laps to go in the Spring Explosion 150 on Saturday night to win at Concord Speedway.
The win is Brunnhoelzl III’s first victory of the season. He has finishes inside the top-10 during the first two events this year. Brunnhoelzl III now has 27 career wins in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Series.
“We hadn’t raced here in a long time, so just going off a little past knowledge, and overheard conversations that the track had worn out, so kinda just wanted to bide our time,” Brunnhoelzl III said. “The first half I actually figured out that it was a little harder on tires than we expected, but the guys did a great job on the pit stop.”
Jason Myers started on the pole for the 150-lap race; however, it was Burt Myers, who led the first 18 laps. NASCAR XFINITY Series driver, Ryan Preece made his way around Myers to take the lead on lap 19. Staying in close contact, Burt Myers was able to reclaim the lead on lap 63. Preece took over the race lead for the second time 19 laps later, but by then, Andy Seuss and Ted Christopher had joined the hunt for the lead.
“That was a fun race,” Christopher said “This is a very demanding racetrack as far as giving and taking. We gave a little and took a little, but that was fun racing, man. That was really fun.”
In the closing 50 laps, Seuss, Christopher and Burt Myers would go back and forth for the lead. While they all fiercely battled for the top spot, Brunnhoelzl III was able to sneak back into the hunt and make the winning pass on Seuss on lap 148.
Finishing second on Saturday night was Ted Christopher, followed by Burt Myers and Andy Seuss. Jason Myers rounded out the top-five.
Throughout the night, there were eight lead changes among five drivers. With 50 laps led, Ryan Preece topped all of the over drivers on Saturday for most laps led in the event.
Burt Myers currently leads the championship point standings by six points over George Brunnhoelzl III. Andy Suess is third, nine points back. Bobby Measmer Jr. in fourth is 10 points back from the lead, and Jason Myers is fifth, 11 point back.
Next on the schedule for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour is the South Boston 150 at South Boston Speedway on Saturday, April 9.
