Burt Myers Wins NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour Season Opener At Carawayby Hunter Thomas March 13, 2016
SOPHIA, N.C. – On Saturday night at Caraway Speedway, Burt Myers earned his 17th career victory in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour after holding off Bobby Measmer Jr. and Danny Bohn in the Davis Roofing 150.
Burt Myers started second and led 58 laps en route to the victory. The win marked his third at the .455-mile oval in Sophia, North Carolina. Although Myers was up front for a good portion of the night, it was pit strategy and hardnosed racing that earned him the victory in a green-white-checkered finish.
“Any time you can come to Caraway and win, you can put a feather in your cap,” said Myers in Victory Lane. “My hat is off for these guys.”
JR Bertuccio brought out the final caution of the night on lap 146 to set the field up for the green-white-checkered finish. He hit the wall in Turn 2. Once back to green, Myers was able pass pole sitter, Danny Bohn for the race lead. Once out front, Myers never looked back as he piloted his No. 1 Remington SCT/Speedway Auto/Citrusafe Ford to victory.
“Well, I had a little bit better left rear than they did for one thing,” Myers said. “The 40 car (Danny Bohn) ran me clean, and he gave me the room I needed. We just made the move. We had the better car at the end, and like I said, fresher tires are better than anything you could ever ask for, and that’s what did it for us.
Finishing second just behind Myers was Bobby Measmer Jr., followed by Bohn. Jason Myers and Andy Seuss rounded out the top-five.
Throughout the night, there were six lead changes among three drivers. As far as cautions go, there were only seven during the event.
Burt Myers leads the championship point standings by a mere six points over Bobby Measmer Jr. and Danny Bohn, who are tied for second.
Next on the schedule for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour is the Southern Sizzler 150 at Concord Speedway on Saturday, March 19. Also competing at the track that night will be the Pro All Stars Series, Mid-Atlantic Limited Late Models and Mini Stocks.
