Cole Whitt Announced as Full-Time Driver for Premium Motorsports’s No. 98 Carby Kyle Pokrefky February 2, 2016
Three weeks ahead of the Daytona 500, Premium Motorsports has announced that Cole Whitt will drive their No. 98 car full-time in 2016.
Whitt, 24, will move over from Front Row Motorsports’s No. 35 car to compete in what will be his third consecutive full-time season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
The Alpine, Calif. native is already a veteran of 86 starts in Sprint Cup and has a best race finish of 13th from Talladega Superspeedway’s spring race in 2015 and a best championship finish of 31st in both 2014 and 2015.
In 2016, Whitt will benefit from a bolstered Premium Motorsports operation as the team has also announced that they’ve acquired resources from Hillman Racing.
In addition to receiving upgraded cars, Premium has also signed Mike Hillman as its competition director and Mark Hillman as Whitt’s crew chief.
“Jay and the crew at Premium Motorsports impressed me with their vision for the future and commitment to making the No. 98 car competitive week in and week out,” Whitt said. “I look forward to being a big part of the family atmosphere at Premium and having a successful start at the Daytona 500 in a few weeks.”
“We believe Cole is an accomplished young driver who drives aggressively, yet smart,” Jay Robinson, Premium Motorsports’s owner, said. “He’s a great fit for our team as we look to improve our competitiveness in the Sprint Cup Series.”
Sponsorship for Whitt’s 2016 ride is expected to be announced at a later date.
Premium Motorsports’s official release announcing Whitt’s signing states, however, that many of Whitt’s sponsors from last season are expected to join the team for this year.
