Lira Motorsports Completes Lucas Oil 200 Lineupby Kyle Pokrefky February 5, 2016
With the addition of NASCAR Next alumni Gray Gaulding, Lira Motorsports has completed its driver lineup for the ARCA Racing Series’s season opener, the Lucas Oil 200 at Daytona International Speedway.
Gaulding will pilot the team’s No. 38 Ford in the season-opening 80-lap race with sponsorship to be picked up by longtime sponsor Krispy Kreme.
The 17-year-old – who will turn 18 on February 10th – will make his ARCA Racing Series debut with Lira for the season-opening event.
Gaulding will join Jairo Avila Jr., Brandon Lynn and Kyle Weatherman as the team’s fourth driver for next weekend’s race.
“This is a dream come true, the opportunity to race at Daytona International Speedway,” Gaulding said. “I’ve been going down to Daytona every year and supporting Jason (White) in the truck series and telling myself one day I will race here and thanks to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Carlos Lira, Lira Motorsports and Ford Racing that opportunity is now reality.”
Avila Jr., recently announced as a member of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program, will pilot the team’s No. 59 Ford in the first of two starts he has lined up for the weekend.
Avila Jr. will also compete for Rookie of the Year honors in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and will race in the series’ season opener at New Smyrna Speedway with Rev Racing the day after the Lucas Oil 200.
“I cannot be anymore excited than I already am for my double duty weekend,” Avila Jr. stated, “We were really fast during the test so I am going with high expectations for the race.”
Lynn and Weatherman will both compete full-time for Lira in 2016 with Lynn set to drive the No. 36 Ford at Daytona with Weatherman, the 2015 ARCA Rookie of the Year, running the No. 58 Ford.
“I am really excited to get behind the wheel of the No. 58 Ford Fusion down in Daytona,” Weatherman said. We have worked really hard in the shop the past few weeks, and our hard work is going to pay off.
“During the off-season, my guys have given 110% of effort into getting this car ready for Daytona, and we look to carry that momentum to the track each week as we strive to win races and claim the championship at the end of the year!”
Lynn, 21, competed in the last three races of the 2015 season for Lira Motorsports and will run for Rookie of the Year honors for the team this season.
“I really cannot believe this is coming true.” Lynn said. “I never expected to be racing at Daytona at 21 years old. It is a real honor to say that I have gotten the chance to race on a track with so much history.”
The Lucas Oil 200 is set to get underway on Saturday, February 13th.
Live television coverage for the race will be provided by FOX Sports 1.
