LOUDON, N.H. – Early Saturday morning, last week’s winner, Aric Almirola ran into problems when his left rear tire blew out, forcing the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports team to a backup car.
Almirola was slated to start 19th in the Camping World RV Sales 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday, but now he’ll have to start in the back. He was entering the turn when the tire let go, but there was no chance to save the car.
“Yeah, I honestly have no idea what is going on,” Almirola said. “I just don’t know. That was our third or fourth run on that same set of tires so I honestly cannot give you and answer. That was probably my fourth lap on the track. It is just weird.”
The No. 43 team is the second victim of a left rear tire issue. Joey Logano had the same thing happen to him during first practice on Friday. No one is pointing fingers at Goodyear just yet. Teams feel that their low tire pressures could be the cause of the failures.
The minimum tire inflation recommendation for the left rear tire this weekend is 12 psi, however, teams are probably just below that recommendation in effort to get more grip around the “Magic Mile”.
